ALBA represents a global diverse network of individual neuroscientists who are involved in research, education, communication and advocacy, and are committed to supporting and advocating for actions and policies that foster diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in brain sciences across the globe. I am a gay Afro-Latin man living in Canada, originally from Salvador, Bahia—the city with the largest Black population outside of Africa. I left Brazil due to severe funding cuts and the ongoing dismantling of public research institutions, driven by my passion for scientific research. As someone who represents multiple minority identities, I believe that connecting with a support network—especially one focused on neuroscience—can be incredibly valuable for advancing my career and building relationships with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences.
