Community leadership: women are more focused on building community and teams

on Tuesday 14 July at 10:30 AM BST

Prof Laurence Ris (ALBA Ambassador - University of Mons, Belgium) will also give a talk in the Open Theatre on “Community leadership: women are more focused on building community and teams”. Prof. Ris will talk about women in leadership: In general, studies showed that women are more focused on building community and teams. They excel when they negotiate on behalf of the “general welfare” or the “common good”, often leading to neglect their own career advancement. They, more than men, view leadership as an opportunity to grow their subordinates as individuals instead of just giving directions to reach goals. We can think that it is mainly because women are more other-directed and emotionally intelligent, but the Covid-19 crisis showed that they are also as good as men at being decisive without suffering from overconfidence. You can ask questions about this talk to Prof. Ris during the live "Meet ALBA Ambassadors" session.

The tightrope walk in juggling parenthood and academia

on Tuesday 14 July at 10:30 AM BST

Dr Srikanth Ramaswamy (ALBA Ambassador - EPFL, Switzerland) will also give a talk in the Open Theatre on “The tightrope walk in juggling parenthood and academia". As a young scientist and father of two little children,  Dr. Ramaswamy often feels, like most other scientist-parents out there: that it is a tight rope walk in juggling parenthood and academia. The academic enterprise has inadequate support for scientists as parents. During this short talk, Dr. Ramaswamy hopes to sow the seeds for reform. Academia needs to transform its mindset to support scientists as parents. You can ask questions about this talk to Dr. Ramaswamy during the live "Meet ALBA Ambassadors" session.
