ALBA Database of scientists with disabilities

The ALBA Disability & Accessibility Working Group is developing a database to enhance the representation, opportunities, and influence of neuroscientists with disabilities. This initiative aims to make it easier to connect, collaborate, and communicate with researchers who experience disabling conditions or barriers in academic and research environments.

Who can join?

We define ‘disability’ as the interaction between a researcher’s physical, sensory, cognitive, developmental, mental health and/or other conditions or differences, and the contextual and environmental factors within which they work and live, which together result in limitations to their functioning and participation.’ This choice of definition aims for consistency, clarity and inclusivity, and is underpinned by the 'social model' approach, which focuses on how people can be 'dis-abled' by barriers in their environment.

We warmly welcome participation from anyone who feels included within this definition, even if you may not personally self-identify with this language.

What does joining mean?

By joining the database, you may occasionally be contacted by ALBA or by approved partners for specific purposes — for example:

  • To request your advice or input on accessibility-related initiatives;
  • To invite participation in events or consultations;
  • To identify speakers or experts for conferences and workshops;
  • To contribute to improving policies and practices for inclusion in neuroscience.

Participation in any of these activities is entirely voluntary.
