In this webinar, Dr David Pagliaccio (New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University, USA) discusses the findings from his recently published pre-print about an online survey assessing identity and workplace experiences of LGBTQIA+ academics in the US.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+) people often face workplace bias or discrimination. Academia is a unique work environment, which opens LGBTQIA+ people to challenges or harassment in mentorship relationships and interactions with research participants or clinical patients. Experiences of support, workplace climate, and mental health were surveyed online among academics in psychology, neuroscience, and psychiatry. Among over 500 respondents across career stages and institutions, experiences of exclusionary behavior and depression were distressingly common. Building a positive workplace climate is critical to comfort and mental health. As echoed by many participants, structural change is needed to support LGBTQIA+ people in academia through improving education, policy, peer support, and interpersonal climate.
