People with invisible disabilities can face clear disadvantages when working in science. The lack of a stable work environment, long working hours and difficulties with travel and career mobility can be difficult to reconcile with the academic career track. I joined ALBA because :
I believe in the power of informal professional networks, and have experienced the unique strength of female networks. I feel like this is one key way in which imbalances and under-representation can be corrected, via mentoring, sharing of opportunities, and removing the tired excuse of "we couldn't find enough female/minority speakers for our conference". I want to be part of this, and hope to both benefit and contribute in equal parts to the network to bring about the change our field needs.
